HISTORY - APWU POWER was founded in St. Louis, Missouri on April 28, 1979. The APWU National Constitution was amended to include APWU POWER at the union's National Convention in Detroit, Michigan in August of 1980.

PURPOSE - Very simply put, our purpose is to network with women throughout the country on issues that affect women, on ways to educate women and assist them in achieving leadership roles within our Union, to advance issues of women's rights and to encourage women to be involved in our Union and the labor movement.

STRUCTURE -Power committees exist on four levels - local, state, regional and national.  A national Steering Committee, consisting of one coordinator from each of the five regions, assists in local, state and regional committee operations and communications. We are part of the Southern Region. Our coordinator is Koquise Edwards from Midwest City, OK.

"Southern Region POWER Conference"

Sandra's pic is not available at this time. The APWU P.O.W.E.R. Educational Conference will be held on September 6-8, 2002 in New Orleans, Louisiana and I did request that the Local send three (3) members to attend. This will be listed as an agenda item for the August general membership meeting and I ask for your support on this.

Presently, our Local has five (5) women who will be attending the APWU National Convention, four (4) as voting delegates and one (1) will be attending the Human Relations workshops. They are: Sandra Lira, T-2 CFS, Belinda Morales T-2 AMF, Lamonica Biggers T-2 CFS, Prisciliana Cabral T-1 Plant and Renee` Wright, Boerne P.O., respectively.

Needless to say, this is historic for our Local. We must continue to promote involvement in the Union.

I share the same concerns for how our Local's funds are spent. I am looking at how to save money for this conference and will bring this out at the meeting.

PS Form 2460

IF NOT CURRENTLY QUALIFIED, ON PS TEST 710 & 712, YOU MUST SUBMIT A PS Examination Application Form 2460 To BE SCHEDULED FOR THE TEST. If you are looking at bidding/applying for a job where PS Form 2460 is needed and you just aren't sure if you are qualified on the Typing test required for the job, remember " When in doubt, submit it anyway". It could mean the difference in you being awarded the job or disqualifying you because you didn't submit the 2460. You might be presently qualified on a certain typing test that doesn't meet the requirements for this job.

Remember---If you bid to the Plant, you can't use the old bid cards and MUST USE the computer bidding process. Your bid will not count so BEWARE!!! You can only use the bid cards if you are at a station.

Editor woes

I'm not really sure what happened, but we will be operating without Jeff Greenlee as the Editor. Jeff, I hope it's not too late to say this, but you put together one heck of a class paper and I will certainly miss you. Thank you for the recognition our Local Dispatch received during your tenure, and you leave behind some big shoes to fill.

Sunset-Sunrise

I forgot to mention the passing of beloved Clerk Maxine Washington on May 3, 2002. She worked over at Dobie Station for a long time and preparations were under way to have her retirement party at the time of her death. She was employed with the Postal Service for over 34 years. Maxine's co-workers and people in her community spoke of her kindness and how she helped anyone and everyone.

Retired Wainwright Clerk Albert "Peaches" Thompson left us on July 23, 2002 and he had just retired in November 2001. Albert was a funny guy and always had his own advice on everything.

Maxine and "Peaches" were long-time Union members and will be missed by those that knew and loved them. Rest in peace our dear brother and sister.

*****I'll be coordinating the food for the August meeting and I thought a nice spaghetti dinner would be a nice change. If you'd like to help out, call me at 752-5896 beeper or email Sandlira@aol.com. In Solidarity.
